Canada at a Glance:

The following is a summary of the health and safety measures that have been undertaken throughout the regulated provinces of Canada. This information is intended to aid in explaining the “end-to-end travel experience.”

Airports

  • Airports have introduced significant disinfecting programs, implemented social distancing measures, mandatory mask wearing requirements, and in some cases, where appropriate and possible, have been proactively managing the flow of passengers throughout their facilities.

Airlines

  • At a minimum, Canada’s airlines have been following the health and safety advice and operational measures of the International Civil Aviation Organization, which are laid out in their Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS).
  • Beyond that, major Canadian airlines have taken industry-leading steps to ensure safe and healthy flights, including temperature checks, installing HEPA filters on planes, implementing clean cabin initiatives such as electrostatic spraying and mandatory passenger safety routines, requiring the use of face coverings and providing individual sanitization kits.

Hospitality & Lodging

  • As the Canadian lodging sector readies itself to welcome guests back to their hotels and increase guest confidence, the Hotel Association of Canada, in partnership with the American Hotel and Lodging Association, has developed enhanced health and safety protocols and launched the Safe Stay initiative. Safe Stay sets out North American industry-wide health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of guests and employees. All major hotel brands and hotel companies in Canada have signed and adopted the Safe Stay initiative with most exceeding these protocols and requiring hospital grade cleaning protocols and technologies.

Car Rentals

  • Enterprise Holdings is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness in the car rental industry. The company announced the implementation of its Complete Clean Pledge program across the Enterprise Rent-A-CarNational Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands, as well as its comprehensive portfolio of transportation services including the company’s truck rental, vanpooling, corporate fleet management, retail car sales, carsharing and vehicle-subscription services. The company has implemented this across the organization to ensure its customers feel safe and confident as they move forward and look to travel again.
  • Avis Canada and Budget Canada are using enhanced techniques to clean its vehicles after each rental. In particular, it is paying attention to interior customer touch points such as seats, steering wheels, door handles and other hard surfaces. All employees are being urged to follow public health orders, stay home if they are ill, and wash their hands frequently.

Public Transit

Rail

  • Rocky Mountaineer has introduced enhanced health and safety measures at every stage of its journey, including taking the temperature of passengers and ensuring all team members are wearing face coverings, gloves, and other PPE as needed. It has also revised its seating arrangements to allow for easier social distancing, and its trains come equipped with air filtration systems that ensure a constant intake and circulation of fresh air.

Business Meetings and Events

  • The Canadian business events sector has been convening multiple task forces to design made-in-Canada, large venue protocols to ensure that gathering of larger groups will be done in a safe fashion. This will ensure that group travel can return and be hosted in health-conscience facilities with the highest level of operator excellence.
